Louisiana Business Insurance

Covington & Slidell Independent Insurance Agents

Louisiana business insurance protects employers from financial loss through liability, property, and employee injury coverages, including general liability, workers comp, commercial auto, and builders risk. An independent agency in Covington and Slidell compares traditional carriers and self-insured funds side by side, so your coverage fits the way your company actually operates.

Louisiana Business Insurance: Protecting Your Local Company

Picture a roofing crew in Slidell finishing a job when a ladder slips and dents a client's truck. The same week, one of the workers strains his back and a company pickup gets rear-ended on I-12. That is three separate claims, three separate policies, and three chances for a coverage gap to cost you real money.

The Louisiana market has shifted a lot this year, and employers should know about these changes:

These reforms may ease claim severity over time. They do not remove your need for solid limits, though. A single lawsuit can still put a small St. Tammany Parish business under.

Core Coverages for Louisiana Employers

Most Louisiana employers need some mix of the five coverages below. The right blend depends on your trade, payroll, vehicles, and whether you build or own property.

General Liability and Property Protection

General liability covers third-party bodily injury and property damage. Think of a customer tripping in your Covington storefront, or a plumber's crew flooding a client's kitchen. Small Louisiana construction crews of two to five employees typically pay between $1,300 and $3,800 a year for general liability in 2026. Where you land in that range depends on your trade and claims history.

Contractors should watch one rule closely. Starting August 1, 2026, Act 757 raised the minimum general liability requirement for residential contractors and mold remediators from $100,000 to $500,000. If your policy renewed before that date at the old limit, your licensing could be at risk.

Commercial property protects your building, equipment, and inventory. In our hurricane-exposed parishes, the details matter a lot. Named-storm deductibles, flood exclusions, and whether you have replacement cost or actual cash value all deserve a close look. Many owners first discover their wind deductible is a percentage of the building value, not a flat dollar amount, when they file a claim. That is too late to fix it.

Some businesses insured through Louisiana Citizens are seeing relief. The state approved PICA to take over 4,764 commercial policies in September 2026, and those policyholders are seeing premium savings of 15% to 40%.

Workers Comp and Commercial Auto Requirements

Louisiana generally requires employers to carry workers' compensation once they have employees, even part-timers. Workers comp pays medical bills and lost wages after a job injury. It also typically shields you from most employee lawsuits over that injury. A common mistake we see is misclassifying workers as subcontractors. If that "sub" has no coverage of his own, an injury claim can land on your policy at audit time, or worse, on you directly.

Commercial auto covers vehicles your business owns or uses. Personal auto policies often exclude business use, so an accident while hauling materials could be denied. Hired and non-owned auto coverage is worth asking about if employees ever drive their own cars on errands for you.

Fleet owners may benefit from technology now. Bulletin 2026-02 set reporting requirements for premium credits tied to dashboard cameras and telematics on commercial vehicles. Footage from a dash cam can also settle fault disputes quickly, which matters more under the new 51% bar.

Builders Risk for Construction Projects

Builders risk covers a structure while it is under construction or renovation. It typically protects framing, materials stored on site, and sometimes materials in transit against fire, wind, theft, and vandalism. Your general liability policy will not pay for lumber stolen from your own job site, and the owner's homeowners policy may not cover an unfinished addition.

Policies are usually written for the project term, often three to twelve months. You can extend them if the job runs long. Coverage for flood and named storms may require a separate endorsement in coastal parishes, so confirm this before the slab is poured.

Comparing Insurance Carriers vs. Self-Insured Funds

Workers comp in Louisiana does not have to come from a traditional insurance company. Self-insured funds (SIFs) are groups of similar employers who pool their risk. They are regulated by the Louisiana Department of Insurance under La. R.S. 23:1191-1200.17. Many are trade-specific, such as funds built for home builders or agricultural operations.

Feature Traditional Carrier Self-Insured Fund
Ownership Shareholders or policyholders of a large insurer Member employers in the group
Upfront cost Fixed premium, set at policy start Contribution set by the fund, may require deposits
Dividend potential Rare, depends on carrier Possible when the group has good loss years
Assessment risk None, carrier absorbs shortfalls Members may be assessed if the fund runs short
Industry focus Broad, many industries Often one trade or industry
Safety programs Varies by carrier Often tailored to the member trade
Leaving Cancel or non-renew May have exit rules or tail obligations

The upside of a fund is that premium dollars typically stay within the member group rather than going to corporate shareholders. Strong safety cultures can earn money back. The catch is shared responsibility. If the group has a bad stretch, members can owe more. A business with steady safety habits and a long-term outlook may do well in a fund. A company with volatile payroll or recent claims may prefer the predictability of a carrier.

Why Partner with an Independent Agency in Covington and Slidell?

Aubert Insurance Agency has been insuring Louisiana businesses and families since 1910. That kind of history means we have seen storms, market swings, and carriers come and go from this state. Our offices in Covington and Slidell serve owners across St. Tammany Parish who want a person they can actually call.

A captive agent can only sell one company's products. If that carrier raises rates or drops your class of business, you are back to square one. As an independent agency, we compare multiple markets for you. That includes traditional carriers and, where it fits, self-insured funds. It matters most in a year like this, with new carriers entering the state and depopulation programs moving Citizens policies.

We also take time to explain what your policy says. An insurance policy is a legally binding contract, and its exclusions matter as much as its coverages. We would rather walk you through your flood exclusion now than explain it after a claim.

Our process takes three steps:

  • Start Online: Tell us about your operations.
  • We Shop For You: We compare options across carriers.
  • Pick The Best Plan: You choose with clear side-by-side information.

Common Questions About Louisiana Business Insurance

Do I need workers comp if I only have one employee? In most cases, yes. Louisiana's requirement generally applies once you have an employee, and an uninsured injury can leave you paying medical bills and lost wages yourself.

How does builders risk work for renovations? Many carriers may write builders risk for remodels, typically covering the new work and materials rather than the existing structure. The existing building usually stays on the owner's property policy, so both policies should be coordinated.

What does commercial auto cover that my personal policy does not? Commercial auto typically covers business use, employee drivers, higher liability limits, and vehicles titled to your company. Personal policies often exclude claims that happen while you are working.

Is a self-insured fund safe? Louisiana SIFs are state-regulated, but members share financial responsibility and may be assessed in bad years. Review a fund's financial health and exit terms before you join.

Does the new contractor liability minimum affect me? If you are a residential contractor or mold remediator, the minimum rose to $500,000 on August 1, 2026. Check your current certificate today.

Can I bundle these coverages? Many carriers typically offer a business owners policy that combines general liability and property for smaller operations. Workers comp and commercial auto are usually written separately.

Making the Right Choice for Your Coverage

The right mix of Louisiana business coverage is about matching your policies to your risks. A landscaper in Mandeville needs different protection than a general contractor framing homes in Slidell or a café owner on Columbia Street. The 2026 reforms, new carriers, and growing options in workers comp give owners more room to improve coverage and pricing than they have had in years. Those gains only come if someone actually compares the options.

Start by gathering your current declarations pages, payroll figures, vehicle list, and any upcoming projects. Note your renewal dates, especially if you are a contractor facing the new liability minimum. Then let a local team that has served this community for more than a century do the shopping for you.

Ready to see how your current policies stack up? Start a Quote with Aubert Insurance Agency today. We will compare carriers and self-insured funds, explain what each option means for your business, and help you choose coverage that holds up when you need it most.

President

We've been independent since 1910, and four generations of local ownership have kept us that way. We're one of the oldest agencies in St. Tammany Parish and the fourth oldest business in the City of Covington. I treat that history as a responsibility rather than a plaque on the wall. My job is to keep us answering to the families and business owners who walk through our doors, and to keep serving this parish for another hundred years.

Louisiana Insurance Questions, Answered

Questions clients ask us

Short, plain answers to what people ask before they call. Anything else, phone the office and ask.

  • What does an independent insurance agency do?

We represent you, not one insurance company. We gather your information once, then compare coverage and price across the carriers we hold contracts with. You get choices, and one agent handles the paperwork.

  • Which types of insurance does Aubert offer?

We write 13 personal lines, including home, auto, flood, boat, and life. We write 15 commercial lines, including business owners policies, general liability, workers compensation, and commercial property.

  • Do I need flood insurance in St. Tammany Parish?

Your homeowners policy excludes flood, and much of the Northshore has flooded outside mapped high-risk zones. Lenders require it inside those zones. We check your flood zone and quote NFIP and private options.

  • Which states are you licensed in?

We hold licenses in Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Texas. License numbers appear in the footer of every page on this site.

  • How do you find me a competitive rate?

We take your details once and market them to the carriers and wholesale brokers that fit your risk. We compare the offers, explain the differences in coverage, and recommend the strongest fit.

  • How do I file a claim or request a certificate?

Call the office or use the Client Center on this site. We report the claim, follow the adjuster, and send certificates of insurance to whoever needs them.
