Louisiana Personal Insurance

Covington & Slidell Independent Insurance Agents

Personal property covers furniture, clothing, tools and electronics. Jewellery, firearms and silver carry low internal caps, so we schedule those items separately when they are worth more than the cap.

Your belongings

An independent agency in Covington and Slidell compares quotes from several insurance carriers at once, so Northshore families don't have to call each company themselves. The agency reviews your home, vehicles, flood exposure, boat, and liability needs, then matches you with policies that fit your budget and risk.

That matters more in Louisiana than almost anywhere else. Rates swing widely between companies, carriers enter and leave the state, and a policy that looked fine three years ago may now leave real gaps. For a standard profile in Louisiana, the price difference between the most and least expensive carrier can top $1,200 a year. That gap alone makes comparison shopping worth a closer look.

This guide covers how Louisiana personal insurance works when someone shops it for you. It explains what each policy type should cover for a St. Tammany household and where families commonly get caught short.

The Advantage of an Independent Agency for Louisiana Families

A captive agent sells one company's products. An independent agency works with many carriers, which changes the conversation. Instead of asking "how do I make this one policy fit?" the question becomes "which company fits this household right now?"

That flexibility counts in 2026. The Louisiana Department of Insurance licensed three new homeowners insurers through April of this year: Progressive Paloverde, Continental Indemnity Company, and GuardianPointe Insurance Company. Rate filings also pulled in opposite directions. USAA filed for a 9.2% increase while Cajun Underwriters Reciprocal Exchange filed for a 10% decrease. A family loyal to one carrier might never learn that a competitor moved the other way.

State regulators say the same thing. The Department of Insurance has urged policyholders to "shop around by contacting multiple agents and insurance companies" to take advantage of recent decreases. An independent agency does that legwork in one sitting.

Protecting Your Home and Property in the Northshore Area

Homes on the Northshore face a particular mix of risks. Hurricanes and tropical storms bring wind damage, tall pines fall on roofs, and heavy rain can overwhelm drainage in neighborhoods that have never flooded before. Your property coverage has to account for all of that, and the details in the policy matter more than the premium.

One shift every homeowner should know about: Act 9 of the 2024 legislative session repealed the "Three-Year Rule". That rule used to limit insurers from non-renewing policies that had been in force more than three years. Carriers now have more freedom to drop longtime customers, so a non-renewal notice can arrive even if you've never filed a claim. Having an agency with access to multiple carriers gives you somewhere to go when that happens.

The market itself shows early signs of stabilizing. Louisiana homeowners insurers posted a five-year average combined ratio of 130.5% in 2025, but the annual ratio has stayed under 100% for four straight years. That's encouraging. It also means carriers are still cautious about pricing.

Louisiana Homeowners and Flood Insurance Essentials

The mistake we see most often is simple: homeowners assume their policy covers flood. Standard homeowners policies typically exclude flood damage from rising water. You need a separate flood policy.

Here's what to review on your homeowners coverage:

  • Named storm or hurricane deductible: Often a percentage of your dwelling limit, not a flat dollar amount. A 5% deductible on a $350,000 home means you pay $17,500 before coverage applies.
  • Dwelling limit: Should reflect current rebuilding costs in St. Tammany, not your purchase price or market value.
  • Replacement cost vs. actual cash value: Replacement cost typically pays to rebuild or replace with new materials. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation.
  • Roof coverage terms: Some carriers may apply depreciation schedules to older roofs.

For flood, Louisiana remains the third-largest state for NFIP policies, with 406,717 in force as of April 2026. Private flood is growing fast too. The U.S. private flood market is expanding at roughly 20% a year. Some private policies may offer higher limits or additional living expense coverage, so comparing both options makes sense.

Comprehensive Car and Boat Coverage for Local Lifestyles

Auto insurance finally has some good news. Louisiana private passenger auto premiums dropped an average of 5.8% in 2025, and that trend has continued into 2026. Allstate subsidiaries ANAIC and Encompass also filed for rate decreases of 8% and 15%.

Commissioner Temple has credited the 2025 legal reforms, including the shift to modified comparative fault and the repeal of the "Housley Presumption," with reducing litigation and slowing auto rate growth. If you haven't compared auto quotes since those changes, your current rate may not reflect the new market.

Don't trim coverage to chase a lower number, though. Louisiana has a high share of uninsured drivers, so uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is one of the most valuable parts of your policy. Families commuting on I-12 or across the Causeway should also check rental reimbursement and roadside assistance.

Boats are a different story. Many homeowners policies may offer only minimal coverage for small watercraft, and often none for larger boats or higher horsepower motors. A dedicated boat policy typically covers hull damage, theft, liability if someone gets hurt, and sometimes towing on the water. If you take a bay boat out of Slidell or keep a pontoon on the Tchefuncte, ask about storm haul-out coverage and whether your trailer is included.

Why Umbrella Coverage is a Vital Layer of Protection

Picture this: your teenager rear-ends a car on Highway 190, and three people go to the hospital. Medical bills and a lawsuit quickly pass your $100,000 per-person auto liability limit. Anything beyond that limit can come after your savings, your home equity, or future wages.

An umbrella policy sits on top of your home, auto, and boat liability. It typically kicks in once those underlying limits run out, often in increments of $1 million. Some policies may also cover claims your base policies exclude, like certain defamation or false arrest claims.

Northshore families who should seriously consider an umbrella include those with:

  • A pool, trampoline, or dock
  • Teen drivers in the household
  • A boat or personal watercraft
  • Rental property
  • Significant retirement savings or home equity

Most carriers require minimum liability limits on your auto and homeowners policies before they'll write an umbrella. That's another reason to shop everything together. An agency that sees your full picture can make sure the layers line up without gaps between them.

Comparing Coverage: Standard vs. Enhanced Protection

Minimum or "standard" setups keep premiums down, but they often leave households exposed in exactly the situations Louisiana families face. Here's how common choices compare. Specific terms vary by carrier.

Coverage Area Standard Setup Enhanced Setup Why It Matters
Auto liability 15/30/25 (state minimum) 100/300/100 or higher Minimums rarely cover a serious multi-car crash
Uninsured motorist Waived or minimal Matches liability limits Protects you when the other driver can't pay
Home dwelling Actual cash value Replacement cost Depreciation can cut a roof claim sharply
Hurricane deductible 5% of dwelling 2% where available Lower out-of-pocket cost after a storm
Flood None NFIP or private policy Homeowners policies typically exclude flood
Boat Homeowners add-on only Standalone boat policy Broader hull, liability, and towing coverage
Personal liability Home/auto limits only $1M+ umbrella Shields savings and future income

The enhanced column usually costs more. Even so, the price difference between the two is often smaller than families expect, especially once multi-policy pricing from a single carrier comes into play.

Common Questions About Louisiana Personal Insurance

Does my homeowners policy cover flooding? Typically no. Flood damage from rising water requires a separate NFIP or private flood policy.

Can my insurer drop me even if I've never filed a claim? Yes. Since the Three-Year Rule was repealed in 2024, carriers have more freedom to non-renew longtime policies, so it helps to have an agent who can shop alternatives quickly.

Is it worth comparing auto quotes again this year? Usually, yes. Auto rates in Louisiana have been trending down, and a new comparison may turn up a lower price for the same or better coverage.

What's the difference between an independent agent and a captive agent? A captive agent represents one insurance company. An independent agent compares several carriers and recommends the one that fits you.

Do I need an umbrella policy if I'm not wealthy? Often, yes. Lawsuits can reach future wages and home equity, and umbrella coverage is typically affordable compared with the protection it provides.

How long does flood insurance take to start? NFIP policies generally have a 30-day waiting period, so don't wait until a storm is in the Gulf. Some private flood policies may have shorter waits.

Making the Right Choice for Your Family's Future

Louisiana's insurance market is moving in several directions at once. New carriers are arriving, auto rates are easing, homeowners filings vary widely, and insurers can now non-renew longtime customers. Families who review their coverage regularly tend to catch problems early. Families who don't often find the gaps right after a storm or an accident.

The smart move is a yearly review of your full picture: home, flood, cars, boat, and umbrella together. Ask what your deductibles really cost you, whether your dwelling limit matches rebuilding prices, and whether your liability limits protect what you've built.

My job is to keep us answering to the families and business owners who walk through our doors, and to keep serving this parish for another hundred years.
