Louisiana Umbrella Insurance: A 40 to 60 Word Direct Answer

A personal umbrella policy is an extra layer of liability protection that sits over your auto, home, and boat insurance. When a serious accident or lawsuit uses up the limits on those primary policies, the umbrella typically picks up the remaining covered costs. That protects your savings, home equity, and future wages from major judgments.

Business activity at home

Running a business from the house creates exposures a homeowners policy will not answer. A business owners policy covers that side.

How an Umbrella Policy Sits Over Your Auto, Home, and Boat Coverage

Picture a stack. Your auto, homeowners, and boat policies form the bottom layer, and each has its own liability limit. The umbrella rests on top of all of them at once. It does nothing until one of those underlying policies pays out its full limit, and then it starts paying.

Here's a realistic scenario. You rear-end a pickup on Highway 190 in Covington, and the other driver ends up with surgeries and months of lost work. Your auto policy pays up to its bodily injury limit and stops. If the settlement or verdict runs higher, the umbrella typically covers the gap, along with legal defense costs in many policies.

The same logic applies across your other exposures:

  • Home: A guest falls down your back steps in Slidell and sues for medical bills and lost income.
  • Boat: Your wake swamps a smaller boat on Lake Pontchartrain and a passenger is injured.
  • Personal liability: Some umbrellas may also respond to claims like libel or slander that a standard homeowners policy might exclude.

One policy, one premium, sitting over several. That's the appeal. Each carrier writes its own contract, though, so coverage for specific situations can vary, and reading the exclusions matters.

Your lender requires coverage at least equal to the loan, and will buy a policy on your behalf at your expense if yours lapses.

Why Louisiana's Low State Minimums Leave Drivers Underinsured

Louisiana's required auto liability limits were set for a different era of medical costs. A single night in a trauma unit, followed by surgery and rehab, can blow through a minimum-limits policy before the injured person even goes home. Whatever the policy doesn't pay, the at-fault driver may owe personally.

That exposure is sharper here than in many states. Louisiana ranked among the top 10 states for nuclear verdicts, with six jury awards in 2025 totaling $1.27 billion. You don't need to be on the wrong end of a billion-dollar case for that trend to matter. Large awards shape what plaintiffs' attorneys ask for in ordinary cases, too.

The legal rules also changed recently. Starting in 2026, Louisiana's "No Pay, No Play" law prevents uninsured drivers from recovering the first $100,000 in damages, even when they aren't at fault. And on January 1, 2026, the state moved to a modified comparative fault system with a 51% bar, meaning anyone found 51% or more at fault can't recover damages at all. State leaders have pushed these reforms to lower costs; the Insurance Commissioner said his office worked with legislators to address legal reform and bring down the cost drivers in the auto market.

Here's what that means for you. Reforms may change who collects, but they don't make a severely injured person's bills smaller. If you're the at-fault driver, the gap between your policy limit and the damages is still yours.

The flip side is just as real. Plenty of drivers on Northshore roads carry only minimum limits, or none. In the 2026 market, personal umbrellas are often used to provide excess uninsured/underinsured motorist protection against that volume of underinsured drivers. Not every umbrella includes it automatically, so ask whether excess UM/UIM is available on the policy you're considering.

Required Underlying Limits for an Umbrella Policy

Every homeowners policy excludes certain causes of loss. Two of them matter enormously on the Northshore, and both can be bought back separately.

Comparing Primary Limits vs. Umbrella Coverage

Feature Primary Auto/Home/Boat Liability Personal Umbrella
When it pays First, from the start of a covered claim After primary limits are used up
What it covers One type of risk per policy Typically sits over several policies at once
Typical limit sizes Set by you, subject to state minimums Usually sold in $1 million increments
Defense costs Generally included Often included, varies by carrier
Excess UM/UIM Limited to your auto UM limit May be available as an option
Cost to add $1 million Varies widely Often a few hundred dollars per year

On price, a standard $1 million personal umbrella for a Louisiana household with two cars and one home typically costs between $300 and $600 per year as of September 2026. Adding a second million generally runs an additional $75 to $125 per year. That second layer is where the value really shows: the first million costs the most, and each added million costs less.

Who Needs an Umbrella Policy in Louisiana?

There's a misconception that umbrellas are only for the wealthy. In practice, the people who need one most are those with something a judgment could take: a paid-down house, a retirement account, a good income, or a teenage driver in the household. Lawsuits don't size themselves to what you think you're worth.

Protecting Assets for Property Owners and High Earners

If your net worth exceeds your auto and home liability limits, you have uncovered exposure. A judgment can reach savings and investment accounts, and in some cases wages can be garnished for years. High earners face a quieter risk here: even if you don't have much saved yet, your future income makes you a more attractive target.

A good rule of thumb is to compare your total assets plus a few years of income against your current liability limits. If there's a gap, an umbrella is usually the most efficient way to close it. Households with teenage drivers, frequent guests, swimming pools, trampolines, or dogs should look especially hard, since those are the exposures behind many of the bodily injury claims homeowners see.

Common Questions About Louisiana Umbrella Insurance

Does an umbrella policy cover my own injuries or damage to my car? No. An umbrella is liability coverage, so it pays for harm you cause to others. Your own car repairs and injuries fall under your collision, medical, and UM coverages.

How much umbrella coverage should I buy? Most people start at $1 million. If your assets and income exceed that, adding more is often inexpensive relative to the protection.

Can I buy an umbrella from a different company than my auto insurer? Often yes, though some carriers require you to keep your underlying policies with them. An independent agent can tell you which arrangement fits your situation.

Will an umbrella cover my business? Generally no. Personal umbrellas typically exclude business activities, so business owners usually need a commercial umbrella instead.

Does it cover my teenager when they drive? Usually, if they're a listed driver on your auto policy and live in your household. Confirm this with your agent, because rules vary by carrier.

Is umbrella insurance worth it if I rent instead of own? It can be. Renters still face auto and personal liability lawsuits, and future wages are at risk even without home equity.

Making the Right Choice for Your Family

Louisiana's combination of minimum-limits drivers, large jury awards, and recently changed fault rules makes the space between your policy limits and a serious claim more expensive than many families realize. An umbrella fills that space for a few hundred dollars a year, and it may also protect you when the other driver is the one who's underinsured.

The details matter, though: underlying limit requirements, boat and rental property rules, excess UM/UIM options, and exclusions all vary by carrier. That's where working with an independent agency helps. Aubert Insurance Agency compares coverage from multiple leading companies and takes the time to explain what your contract actually covers, so you know where your protection starts and stops.

We've been independent since 1910, and four generations of local ownership have kept us that way. We're one of the oldest agencies in St. Tammany Parish and the fourth oldest business in the City of Covington. I treat that history as a responsibility rather than a plaque on the wall. My job is to keep us answering to the families and business owners who walk through our doors, and to keep serving this parish for another hundred years.

Louisiana Insurance Questions, Answered

Questions clients ask us

Short, plain answers to what people ask before they call. Anything else, phone the office and ask.

  • What does an independent insurance agency do?

We represent you, not one insurance company. We gather your information once, then compare coverage and price across the carriers we hold contracts with. You get choices, and one agent handles the paperwork.

  • Which types of insurance does Aubert offer?

  • Which states are you licensed in?

We hold licenses in Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Texas. License numbers appear in the footer of every page on this site.

  • How do you find me a competitive rate?

We take your details once and market them to the carriers and wholesale brokers that fit your risk. We compare the offers, explain the differences in coverage, and recommend the strongest fit.

  • How do I file a claim or request a certificate?

Call the office or use the Client Center on this site. We report the claim, follow the adjuster, and send certificates of insurance to whoever needs them.
